LED ZEPPELIN's Limited-Edition 7-Inch Was Top-Selling 'Record Store Day'-Exclusive Single
May 2, 2018According to Billboard, LED ZEPPELIN's double-sided seven-inch single "Friends"/"Rock And Roll" was the top-selling Record Store Day-exclusive single at indie stores this year. The limited-edition single is produced by Jimmy Page and pressed on yellow vinyl. The single features two previously unheard studio mixes, handpicked by Page to appear on the release: the "Sunset Sound Mix" of "Rock And Roll" b/w the "Olympic Studios Mix" of "Friends".
The previously unreleased version of "Rock And Roll" provides an additional peek into the fabled "Sunset Sound Mixes" of "Led Zeppelin IV". Only two previous "Sunset Sound Mixes" have been released, the first being the version of "When The Levee Breaks" on the original album and the second the "Stairway To Heaven" mix that debuted on the 2014 deluxe edition. The previously unheard "Olympic Studios Mix" of "Friends" is a stripped-down version, without the orchestration of the final mix, offering a true fly-on-the-wall feel from the band's recording sessions for "Led Zeppelin III" at Headley Grange.
Page told The Pulse Of Radio that ZEPPELIN was aware that the music they were creating not only stood out in its time but was music for the ages. "We knew that we were doing work that was… it was substantial, because it wasn't like... what anybody else was doing," he said. "So, then it has a substance to it and it's radical, purely because of that level. As far as the, sort of, counterpoint of the four musicians playing together and the sum total of that — or even the alchemy of it — that basically is what the magical aspect of LED ZEPPELIN is, I believe."
Robert Plant explained that LED ZEPPELIN constantly stayed ahead of the curve by never resting on their creative laurels. "You have to be creative and imaginative and move on," he said. "And I think the great essence of LED ZEPPELIN is the creativity and the imagination that developed with each project. And a project is a project. It's not just going back and visiting the past. It's moving forward."
LED ZEPPELIN released a newly remastered version of its classic live album "How The West Was Won" in multiple formats on March 23, including the first-ever vinyl and Blu-ray Audio editions (with the Blu-ray containing hi-res 5.1 surround sound).
